  1. US House approved resolution to halt Iran military action.
  2. Significant political setback for President Donald Trump's policy.
  3. Resolution now moves to US Senate for further action.

In a major setback, the US House approved a war powers resolution that would halt the US military action against Iran. For the first time, the House has defied US President Donald Trump's military action, as a handful of Republicans joined with Democrats to end the three-month-long war that has reordered politics at home and abroad.

Earlier, House Speaker Mike Johnson had tried to prevent an outcome that would show the mounting opposition to the war, abruptly shutting down floor action two weeks ago when the war powers resolution was on the verge of approval.

What happened in the US House?

But displeasure has only grown as the conflict drags on and as Trump struggles to negotiate a quick resolution. The roll call on Wednesday was 215-208, and cheers erupted in the House chamber. This reckless and costly war of choice needs to end today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York said earlier in the week. All we need are a handful of Republicans to join us and we can end this reckless and costly war of choice -- a war that has cost the American taxpayer over USD 100 billion -- that's extraordinary -- and left our country in a weaker position relative to Iran.

Simply Explained

In simpler terms, Lawmakers in the United States are trying to legally force President Trump to stop the ongoing military conflict with Iran. Think of it as the US Parliament telling their President, "You cannot fight this war alone anymore; you need our permission first."

Still Confused? here is a breakdown of what happened, why it matters, and what happens next in simple terms:

1. What is the "House" and a "War Powers Resolution"?

The House: Short for the House of Representatives. It is the lower house of the US Congress. It works similar to the Lok Sabha in India.

War Powers Resolution: This is a special type of political vote or directive. Under the US Constitution, while the President commands the military, only Congress has the official power to declare war. This resolution is Congress pulling the emergency brake, stating that the President has overstepped his boundaries.

2. Why did they vote on this?

The US and Iran have been in a direct military conflict for about three months. Lawmakers are pushing back for a few big reasons:

Massive Cost: The war has already cost American taxpayers over $100 billion.

Economic Impact: The conflict has disrupted major oil shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz. This has caused global oil and gas prices to jump significantly, something even everyday Indian consumers notice at the petrol pump.

Political Pressure: For the first time, a few members of Donald Trump’s own political party (Republicans) broke away and voted with the opposition (Democrats) to pass this. It is considered as a major embarrassment and a strong disapproval of the President's war strategy.

3. What does this change right now?

In the immediate short term, it does not instantly stop the war, but it is a massive political roadblock.

It’s a warning: It sends a clear message to the world and the US military that the American public and its lawmakers are losing patience.

Next stop, the Senate: For this to have full weight, it must now be fully cleared by the US Senate. The US Senate is the upper house, similar to the Rajya Sabha in India.

In a nutshell, The US President has been carrying out military strikes against Iran on his own authority. The US version of the Lok Sabha just voted to tell him: "Stop the military action. If you want to fight, you must come through us first."
