UK Cabinet Reshuffle Shifts British-Indian Representation: 3 MPs Join Frontbench While 2 Return to Backbenches

Indian-origin British leaders have taken up significant roles in the United Kingdom government, with Kanishka Narayan (36) emerging as the Artificial Intelligence (AI) minister and the appointment of two Sikh women MPs, namely, Satvir Kaur (41) and Harpreet Kaur Uppal (43).  The UK government's 2026 government reshuffle therefore witnesses two Hindus and two Sikhs.  Sri Lankan-origin Hindu Uma Kumaran has been made a junior minister in the Foreign Office.

Kanishka Narayan- The AI Minister

Britain's new prime minister, Andy Burnham, decided to retain Narayan's role as the AI minister and elevated the portfolio to the cabinet-role position. First appointed as AI minister by former Prime Minister Keir Starmer on 7 September 2025, Narayan served in the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology. He was elected as the MP for Vale of Glamorgan in July 2024.

Born in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, Narayan moved to Cardiff, Wales, when he was 12 years old. He studied at Cathays High School before attending Eton College on scholarship.

Narayan studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Balliol College, University of Oxford, and holds an MBA from Stanford University.

Satvir Kaur 

Satvir Kaur, Member of Parliament for the Southampton Test constituency, has been designated with a key role on the Burnham government's front bench. Her parents are from Punjab and ran a sari shop in Southampton. She has been appointed minister for security, violence against women and girls, and equality.

Harpreet Kaur Uppal

Harpreet Kaur Uppal holds an advantage from her prior experience working with Burnham and her geographical proximity. She worked with Andy Burnham during the 2017 Greater Manchester mayoral election campaign. She represents the Huddersfield constituency and has been appointed assistant whip in Andy Burnham's new cabinet.

2 Shifted To Backbenches

Meanwhile, two Indian associates of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer have been shifted to the backbenches after the Burnham reshuffle. The two high-profile PIO MPs are identified as Seema Malhotra, former Indo-Pacific Minister, and Preet Kaur Gill, ex-Junior Health Minister. Both are 53 years old. 

When Starmer lost the 2026 local body elections in May, Gill publicly backed the ex-PM and urged her colleagues to submit their resignation as well. Malhotra too made statements backing Starmer.

Meanwhile, Lisa Nandy, who is half-Indian, her father, Dipak Nandy, is originally from Kolkata. She has been retained in the cabinet as culture secretary. She had several points in her favour with Burnham, having been born in Manchester, where Burnham served as mayor for nine years.
