United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Monday underscored the strategic centrality of India in Washington’s global outlook and indicated that President Donald Trump could visit the country in the near future, possibly within the next one or two years.
Soon after formally assuming charge, Gor highlighted the strong personal rapport between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as genuine and rooted in mutual respect. He said the India–US relationship is anchored at the highest political level, giving it resilience even during moments of disagreement. “Real friends can disagree, but they always resolve their differences in the end,” the ambassador remarked, reflecting on the nature of ties between the two democracies.
India At Core Of US Global Strategy
Calling India Washington’s most consequential partnership, Gor said no other country holds greater strategic importance for the United States. He described the bilateral relationship as one between the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy, with immense potential across security, trade, technology and people-to-people ties. The ambassador said he arrived in India with “profound respect” and a clear mandate to take the partnership to the next level. He added that cooperation would be pursued as “true strategic partners”, with both sides contributing leadership, strength and mutual trust.
Recalling recent conversations with President Trump, Gor said the US President often speaks warmly about his previous visit to India and his friendship with Prime Minister Modi. While no dates have been finalised, the envoy suggested that a presidential visit could take place in the coming year or two. With a touch of humour, Gor noted that Trump’s habit of making late-night phone calls could align well with the India–US time difference, reflecting the informal ease between leaders and their teams.

Trade Talks And PaxSilica Initiative
On economic engagement, Gor said India and the US continue to actively engage on a bilateral trade deal, with further discussions scheduled shortly. He acknowledged that negotiations with the world’s largest democracy are complex but said both sides are determined to move forward.

The ambassador also announced that India will be invited to join ‘PaxSilica’, a US-led strategic initiative aimed at building a secure and innovation-driven silicon supply chain spanning critical minerals, semiconductors, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing. Countries such as Japan, South Korea, the UK and Israel are already part of the initiative.
Gor’s tenure begins amid challenges, with several areas including defence cooperation, advanced technology, AI, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and critical minerals requiring renewed momentum. However, he expressed confidence that the partnership has the depth and political backing needed to overcome recent slowdowns.
Thanking India for a warm welcome, the ambassador said the months ahead present a rare opportunity to redefine diplomacy and shape what could become one of the most consequential global partnerships of this century.
