US President Donald Trump posted an image on his social media platform on Sunday, referring to himself as the “Acting President of Venezuela,” a move that has intensified international debate over Washington’s role in the Venezuelan political crisis. The unusual post listed Trump’s official titles, adding the Venezuelan designation as “Acting President of Venezuela, Incumbent January 2026,” alongside his role as the 45th and 47th President of the United States.

Trump’s post came amid ongoing tensions surrounding the United States’ involvement in Venezuela following a US military operation earlier this month that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas. Both Maduro and Flores were flown to New York, where they were formally indicted on narco-terrorism and drug trafficking charges.

Post Sparks Diplomatic Stir

In the Truth Social post, Trump did not explain whether the “Acting President of Venezuela” label was symbolic, rhetorical or a reflection of his administration’s intended policy toward the crisis. The designation appeared alongside a formal photograph of Trump and has drawn attention from world capitals questioning Washington’s international posture.

The unusual social media declaration follows Trump’s previous comments that the United States would “run Venezuela until we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition.” Trump on Sunday said his administration is working “really well” with Venezuela’s interim leadership under Delcy Rodríguez and indicated he is open to meeting her, weeks after a dramatic US military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while departing Florida, Trump said developments in Venezuela were moving in a positive direction. “Venezuela is really working out well. We’re working along really well with their leadership, and we’ll see how it all works out,” he said. When asked whether he planned to meet Rodríguez, Trump replied, “At some point I’ll be.”

Oil At Centre

Earlier, Trump said energy cooperation remains central to the discussions. He revealed that Venezuela had agreed to send up to 50 million barrels of oil to the United States, a consignment he valued at around 4.2 billion. “She’s been very good. She asked if we could take 50 million barrels of oil, and I said yes,” Trump said, adding that the shipment was already en route.
