In a shocking incident, an Indian-origin 26-year-old woman from Punjab was shot dead in Toronto, Canada, in a “targeted attack.” The deceased had been identified as Navneet Kaur and was killed near Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard. The cops said that the suspect first spoke to the woman and then shot her. The accused has been identified as Sharanjit Singh (37) and has been arrested by the police.
At around 7.23 am on Friday, they received a shooting call about Kaur. Upon arriving at the scene, they found the Indian-origin woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was given emergency medical aid but was later declared dead at the scene despite life-saving measures, police said, CBC reported.
What Did The Eyewitnesses Say?
According to an eyewitness, they saw the victim while they were having coffee in the morning. Kaur was walking east of Humberwood when they saw a man following her. The suspect then said something to Kaur, to which she turned around.
After a brief conversation, Singh shot her and then ran away with the gun, the witness said. The witness said the two individuals did not appear to have been arguing.
Suspect Facing Two Charges
Singh was later located and arrested in connection with the shooting, police said in a news release on Saturday. He's facing two charges of first-degree murder and failure to comply with an undertaking.
Taking to X, police said they believe Kaur's murder was a "targeted attack" and there were no outstanding suspects. They said the motive behind the shooting is still not clear, and the homicide team of police is now investigating the case.Police have also urged anyone with information to reach out to police or to Crime Stoppers. The incident has raised serious concerns over residents' safety in the area.
