Strait of Hormuz Breakthrough Ahead? Iran-Oman Finalise Key Framework As Deal Enters Final Stage

In a significant development, Iran has announced that it has reached a broad understanding with Oman on the future management of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important shipping routes. The announcement comes amid ongoing regional tensions, with Tehran indicating that the agreement is moving closer to its final stage.

Iran Says Framework With Oman Is Ready

Hassan Ghashghavi, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament's National Security Commission, said the two countries have finalised the overall framework of the proposed arrangement, while the final text is still being prepared.

"The general framework of the understanding with Oman has been determined, and the final text and details will be announced soon. Of course, the final decision must be made at higher levels," Ghashghavi told IRNA.

The latest statement comes just days after Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said Tehran and Muscat had agreed on the geographical coordinates of a proposed shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz.

Baghaei said both sides are in the final stages of preparing a joint statement outlining the proposed management mechanism. According to him, the agreed route has been finalised, and the announcement will be made once the review process is complete, provided there is no external interference.

What Does The Draft Proposal Include?

According to Iran's semi-official Fars news agency, the proposed framework would give Iran control over vessels entering the Strait of Hormuz, while Iran and Oman would jointly supervise the exit of ships.

The report said ships would pass through a designated "central corridor", with the two other existing navigation routes expected to be phased out within a specified period.

Why The Strait Of Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's busiest energy corridors, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Around one-fifth of global oil shipments pass through the narrow waterway, making it crucial for international energy markets.

A formal agreement between Iran and Oman could help improve maritime traffic and boost energy exports, although the proposal still requires approval from Iran's top leadership before it can be implemented.
