- Accused stayed overnight, consumed drugs, attempted to destroy evidence.
- Suspects confessed to killings after being detained by police.
In a shocking development, two men have been accused of murdering a retired Hindu schoolteacher, his wife, and their two children in Bangladesh. Following the killings, they allegedly remained inside the family's locked home for several hours, consuming dates, bathing, and taking yaba before departing the following morning, as reported by HT.
The four members of the family were found dead inside their home in Rangpur city late on Saturday night, days after they were allegedly killed.
The accused have been identified as Siddhartha Das, 23, and Mugdha Das, 19. According to Dhaka Tribune, the two allegedly stayed inside the house after the killings and attempted to erase their fingerprints from the victims' mobile phones. They also allegedly staged the crime scene to make it appear that the family had been killed during a robbery.
The deceased were identified as Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty, 50, their daughter Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 23, and their 12-year-old son, Priyam.
Police detained the two suspects from Dakhiganj cremation ground in Rangpur city. The accused are reportedly residents of Machuapara, the area where the killings took place.
What happened?
The Hindu family of four was allegedly killed on Thursday night at their home in Machuapara, in the Kamal Kachna area of Rangpur city. Their bodies, however, were discovered only late Saturday night after police reached the family's locked residence.
According to The Daily Star, the bodies were found in different parts of the house, with household belongings scattered around. Police officials said they recovered the bodies at around 11:30 pm from the Daspara, also known as Machhuapara, area of Rangpur city.
Ganapati's body was found on the rooftop, while Pritilata and her daughter were found on the staircase. The couple's 12-year-old son was found dead underneath a bed, according to the report.
How did the killings unfold?
According to police, the two suspects allegedly entered the family's rooftop through an adjacent building on Thursday night. They reportedly consumed yaba while on the roof.
After hearing noises, Ganapati went upstairs and questioned the two men about why they were there. Police allege that the suspects feared their identities would be exposed and strangled him using a gamchha, a thin cotton towel that he was carrying over his shoulder.
Ganapati reportedly struggled with his attackers, creating a noise that alerted his wife, Pritilata. She went upstairs to investigate, after which the suspects allegedly strangled her with a piece of cloth on the staircase.
The couple's daughter, Prarthi, and their 12-year-old son, Priyam, were also allegedly killed during the incident. Priyam's body was subsequently found underneath a bed inside the house.
Suspects stayed inside after murders
Instead of fleeing immediately after the killings, the two suspects allegedly remained inside the house throughout the night.
Police said the accused took baths in the family's bathroom, ate dates from the dining table and continued consuming yaba after allegedly killing all four family members.
The suspects also reportedly attempted to destroy evidence by soaking Ganapati's and Pritilata's mobile phones in water mixed with washing powder, allegedly in an effort to remove their fingerprints.
According to police, the two men stayed inside the house until Friday morning. They allegedly left only after the area became quieter during Friday prayers.
Before leaving, the suspects allegedly attempted to make the incident appear to be a robbery. Police said they took gold ornaments from the house and later hid them in an abandoned area behind a temple near the residence. The stolen ornaments were also recovered after accused informed the police.
Following their arrest, the two suspects reportedly confessed to killing all four members of the family. A murder case has been filed in connection with the incident, police said.
