The house of former Bangladeshi cricketer Shakib Al Hassan came under attack on Wednesday evening, hours after he attended the press conference of the country's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

According to a report by The Daily Star, some unidentified persons attempted to set Hasan's house in Magura on fire. Shakib, a former lawmaker of Hasina's Awami League, had attended her presser, hosted by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia in New Delhi.

The video from the site shows fire after a few explosions, potentially due to a bomb attack. The video was shared by the Awami League handle on X with a caption, "Torching residences: The cost of attending Awami League press conference. Neo fascism engulfs Bangladesh."

The Awami League alleged that a petrol bomb was used to attack the former Bangladeshi cricket team captain's home.

"Ahead of the press conference, BNP, Islamist Jamaat and NCP all publicly threatened national media outlets to weaponise the judiciary to sue in case of reports of the press conferences," the Awami League said.

Hasina's press conference, first in two years

Hasina on Wednesday held the first-ever press conference in two years, since she fled the country in 2024. She had to leave the country after student protests against quotas, to the kin of the 1971 war, turned into a major uprising against her.

Hasina alleged that the peaceful protest by students was actually a meticulously planned campaign guided by regime change.

She also alleged that Muhammad Yunus, who became the country's interim advisor after her ouster, had allegedly admitted that the protests were a meticulously designed movement, led by a mastermind.

Moreover, she claimed that she tried to negotiate and resolve the issue by dialogue. She said that she even invited the protestors to the Prime Minister's residence and held talks through ministers.

Vowing to return to her country in December, Hasina said that she can't stay away when her people face difficulty. "Whatever fate awaits me, I will return to my people. I cannot stay away while my beloved countrymen are suffering… I want to go back in December," she said.

"They may kill me, put me in jail… I know I may get detained, I may be sent to prison, they may try to force politically motivated fabricated cases, but fear cannot decide my duty to the people. My life went beyond calculations of personal safety long ago," she added.
