A mysterious Russian cargo ship believed to be carrying sensitive nuclear technology possibly intended for North Korea sank off the coast of Spain after a series of unexplained explosions, raising serious international security questions.
According to a CNN investigation, the vessel, named Ursa Major, went down in the Mediterranean Sea on December 23, 2024, around 60 miles from the Spanish coast. Spanish authorities later confirmed that the ship’s Russian captain told investigators the cargo included “components for two nuclear reactors similar to those used in submarines.” It remains unclear whether the reactors contained nuclear fuel.
Vessel sank in highly suspicious conditions
The incident has triggered speculation that the ship may have been part of a secret Russian mission to transfer advanced nuclear submarine technology to North Korea, a close military partner of Moscow. The cargo ship had departed just weeks after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly sent troops to support Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine.
The circumstances surrounding the sinking remain highly suspicious. Investigators believe the ship suffered three explosions on its starboard side, likely near the engine room. Two crew members were killed, while 14 others escaped on lifeboats before being rescued by Spanish authorities.
Public flight tracking data reviewed by CNN also revealed that US nuclear detection aircraft flew over the wreck site twice after the sinking. In another unusual development, a suspected Russian spy ship reportedly visited the wreckage days later and was linked to four additional explosions near the site.

Under cover agent vessel: The Ursa Major
The Ursa Major, also known as Sparta 3, had previously been involved in Russian military operations in Syria. Official shipping records showed it was heading toward Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East after leaving St. Petersburg. However, analysts suspect the vessel’s real destination may have been North Korea.

Spanish rescue teams responding to the emergency found parts of the ship sealed off, including the engine room. Video footage reportedly showed rescuers inspecting containers onboard, some of which appeared filled with fishing nets and miscellaneous equipment, possibly intended to conceal more sensitive cargo.
The sinking occurred during the final weeks of former US President Joe Biden’s administration, at a time of heightened tensions between Russia and the West over the Ukraine conflict. Authorities have yet to publicly explain what caused the explosions or whether foul play was involved.
