Russia Pounds Ukraine's Capital Kyiv With Overnight Missile, Drone Attack; 3 Dead, Multiple Buildings Damaged

Russia launched a fresh overnight barrage of ballistic missiles and drones targeting Kyiv early Saturday, killing at least three people and injuring more than a dozen others, according to Ukrainian officials. The strikes triggered fires, damaged residential buildings, and left several people trapped beneath the rubble in multiple parts of the capital.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko, a five-storey apartment building in the Solomianskyi district was struck by falling debris, with rescue teams searching for people believed to be trapped inside. A fire also broke out in the building's courtyard.

"The first and second floors of the damaged residential building had partially collapsed," Klitschko said in a post on Telegram, adding that a fire had also broken out in the courtyard.

Klitschko later confirmed that three people had been killed, while five others were hospitalised following the strikes. Rescue operations were continuing as emergency workers searched for residents believed to be trapped inside the damaged building.

Multiple Districts Hit As Explosions Rock Kyiv

According to Reuters, more than a dozen blasts could be heard across the city.

In another part of the capital, an apartment block in the Shevchenkivskyi district partially collapsed, with people believed to have been trapped between the first and second floors. Warehouse buildings also ignited in the Darnytskyi district while rescue units dealt with a number of other blazes in Kyiv.

Zelenskyy Renews Call For Patriot Systems

The fresh barrage fell just two days after a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack across Ukraine that left 10 civilians dead and more than 50 injured. During the attack, a Russian missile briefly entered Poland’s airspace, sparking outrage among Nato allies.

In this regard, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy once again called on the United States and allies to increase the supply of Patriot air defence systems.

"The Russian air strikes on our country continue and air defence, specifically interceptors for Patriot systems against ballistic missiles, remains a top priority," Zelenskyy said in a post on Telegram on Friday.

Zelenskyy also revealed that he had spoken with US Vice President JD Vance following his meeting earlier this week with President Donald Trump in Washington, which he described as constructive.

US Yet To Decide On Patriot Production

Ukraine's renewed appeal comes amid uncertainty over future US military assistance. During the NATO summit in Ankara in July, President Donald Trump said the United States would allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriot missile defence systems under licence.

However, speaking during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David on Friday, Trump indicated that no final decision had yet been made regarding the proposal.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Authorities said no injuries were reported, and around 10 fire engines were deployed before firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control.
