Srinagar: Residents of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) are desperately appealing to the Indian Army for help, seeking liberation from what they describe as severe atrocities by Pakistani forces. In viral videos circulating on social media, locals can be heard expressing their pain and pleading for intervention.
One resident stated, "The Pakistani government and its army are committing extreme atrocities on us. For God's sake... Indian Army, help us, free us from here. Free us from Pakistan's oppression." Another woman, Ananta Imran, highlighted the grave situation, noting that many families are unable to locate their relatives. She urged India to assist, saying they have always raised their voice for Kashmir's rights and now appeal to the Indian Army to free them from Pakistani oppression.
Why are PoK residents pleading for help?
The unrest stems from ongoing protests in PoK demanding constitutional and civil rights. After boycotting elections, demonstrators organised a march toward Muzaffarabad, which Pakistani security forces allegedly tried to stop by opening indiscriminate fire. Jagran, citing local sources, reported that over 40 protesters were killed and many others injured in the incident. Among the victims were the brother of a leader from the Joint Awami Action Committee and the father of a senior Pakistan Air Force officer. Reports also claim that medical staff treating the injured faced threats or physical assault.
Pakistan's suppression rule
In response to the protests, Pakistani authorities have imposed strict measures to suppress dissent, including internet shutdowns and the cancellation of registrations for 13 schools and colleges. Protest leaders have vowed to continue the struggle, describing the Muzaffarabad march as a decisive step for securing people's rights. Human rights organisations have called on the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to intervene and conduct an independent investigation into the violence and alleged human rights violations.
This situation underscores the deep frustration among PoK residents, who now view the Indian Army as a potential source of salvation amid the ongoing crackdown.
