Iran-US War: US President Donald Trump on Thursday claimed that the United States and Iran are on the verge of signing a peace agreement that could reopen the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz to global shipping as early as this weekend. Iran, however, pushed back against the claim, insisting that no final decision has been taken on the proposed deal.
If the agreement materialises, it would mark the significant diplomatic breakthrough yet in efforts to end the three-month-long Iran-US-Israel war, which has left thousands dead and triggered sharp spikes in global energy prices.

Trump Cancels Planned Strikes on Iran
Trump announced that planned strikes and bombings against Iran had been cancelled following high-level diplomatic discussions reportedly approved by Iranian leadership and other international stakeholders on Thursday.
The announcement came shortly after Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf responded sharply to Trump's earlier warning, saying the United States would soon “see a different Iran”.
Addressing reporters at the Oval Office, Trump said his understanding was that Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had approved the proposal.
"We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran."
"The strait will officially open as soon as we sign, which could be soon, very soon, maybe over the weekend in Europe," Trump said. He added that Vice President JD Vance could sign the agreement on behalf of the United States.
When asked whether Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei had approved the deal, Trump replied, "I understand the answer is yes."

Iran Rejects Trump's Claims
Dismissing Trump's claims, Iran's Tasnim News Agency said the US president had made similar declarations in the past without any outcome.
"Until Iran announces the matter of a potential understanding, any news from Trump on this subject should be regarded as his previous messages," it said.
However, Iranian state media later reported that Washington had accepted Tehran's "proposed text", and as a result, Iran could "reconsider and review the agreement once again".
According to Iranian media reports, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said that large portions of the text under negotiation had been finalised, but Iran would not compromise on its red lines.
"We have not reached a final conclusion on this matter," he said. "This is a very important issue that is currently being reviewed by the relevant decision-making bodies."

Baghaei also rejected suggestions that Tehran had softened its stance due to military or economic pressure from the United States.
Trump has repeatedly argued that recent US military action and the naval blockade targeting Iranian ports forced Tehran back to the negotiating table and increased its willingness to compromise.

The Middle East conflict started following the killing of 86-year-old Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in joint military strikes by the US and Israel, after which Iran, in its retaliation, targeted Israeli and US assets in several Gulf countries and Israel, causing disruption in the waterway and affecting international energy markets and global economic stability since February 28.
