As the Los Angeles mayoral race is approaching, projections say that Indian-origin Nithya Raman has a high chance of rising to power. The Kerala-born contender is being dubbed as the next Mamdani.

Who Is Nithya Raman?

Born on July 28, 1981, in Kerala, Raman spent her early childhood in India before moving to the United States at the age of six. Her family settled in Louisiana, marking the beginning of her long association with the country where she would later build her career. She became a naturalised American citizen at 22.

Raman pursued graduation from Harvard University and completed a master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Her grassroots activism became more visible in 2017 when she founded the SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition. The organisation focused on homelessness through direct outreach and community engagement, reflecting her belief that local mobilisation can address systemic problems.

She also served as executive director of Time’s Up Entertainment, an organisation linked to the #MeToo movement that aimed to tackle gender inequality in the entertainment industry.

The 45-year-old filed her nomination just hours before the deadline—despite having recently endorsed incumbent mayor Karen Bass for re-election—catching constituents as well as political allies and rivals off guard.

Her entry to the mayoral race can have a significant impact in the political weather of Los Angeles. After months of scrutiny over the city's response to last year's wildfires, along with ongoing worries about homelessness and housing affordability, the battle had seemed to be moving in Bass's favor.

Raman eventually took advantage of Bass's apparent path to another term after several possible opponents had just opted out.
