  2. Alfred Nobel's 1895 will specified Norway for peace award.
  3. Historians link the decision to Norway's peace activism, amidst several explanations.

The Nobel Prize announcements for 2026 have concluded with Navanethem "Navi" Pillay winning the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize. While the other Nobel awards are presented in Sweden, the ceremony for the Peace Prize is held in Norway. Several theories have come up as to why Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor, took this decision to present the Peace Prize in Norway.

Historians around the world have come up with several explanations rather than one to explain this geographical quirk. The most likely explanation is that the decision is a mix of political logic, moral recognition of Norway's peace activism, and literary affection for its culture.

Establishment Of Nobel Prizes

The Nobel prizes were established following the will signed by Alfred Nobel in November 1895. He was a famous Swedish chemist, inventor, and industrialist. After he died in 1896, the Nobel Foundation was founded in 1900 to manage his assets and solve family disputes. To commemorate his fifth death anniversary, the inaugural Nobel Prize ceremony took place on December 10, 1901, honoring notable figures in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace.

Where Are Nobel Prizes Presented?

Annually, the Nobel Prizes are presented on December 10, the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel. For Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Literature, the Nobel Prize will be awarded in Stockholm, Sweden. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, established later, is also awarded in the Swedish capital.

However, the Nobel Peace Prize is presented at Oslo City Hall in Norway. These different locations are part of the arrangement stated in Alfred's will, according to the official Nobel Prize website.

Why Alfred Chose Norway For Peace Prize?

Alfred signed the will in 1895 and categorically mentioned that the Nobel Peace Prize must be awarded by a committee selected by Norway's parliament, known as the Storting. Meanwhile, he handed the responsibilities for other original prizes to Swedish institutions. Alfred Nobel, however, did not explain in his will why he wanted the Peace Prize to be handled by a Norwegian committee.

Although the reason is still unknown, among several explanations, historians think that during the 1980s Norway’s ways of resolving disputes through peace may have affected Nobel to make such a decision. Norway and Sweden were united under a single monarch during Alfred Nobel’s lifetime. In 1905, the union split and Norway became an independent kingdom. The official website of the Nobel Peace Prize lists this reason among possible explanations.
