In a shocking episode mid-air, a Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 operating a domestic flight from Mashhad to Kermanshah in Iran was forced to make an emergency landing back at Mashhad Airport on Tuesday after developing a massive technical problem shortly after takeoff. Reports indicate the aircraft may have lost one of its landing gear tyres, though the exact cause has not been officially confirmed.
What happened during emergency landing?
During the emergency landing, sections of the cabin ceiling lining detached and fell onto passengers. A video released by the Iranian news agency Akharin Khabar captured the moment, showing panels dropping into the cabin and exposing parts of the aircraft’s internal structure. Despite the alarming scenes, no passengers were injured. All those on board were safely evacuated.

None injured in incident: Airlines
According to Brazilian outlet UOL, citing Iran's Rajavi Khorasan provincial government, the incident occurred around 5:39 pm local time. Sepehran Airlines spokesman Hassan Jafari confirmed that passengers disembarked without injury and were later transferred to another flight to complete their journey to Kermanshah. The runway at Mashhad Airport was temporarily closed for inspection and assessment before reopening later the same day.
Initial accounts suggested a tyre may have burst during the takeoff roll, potentially causing engine damage and severe vibrations that prompted the pilots to declare an emergency and return immediately. However, authorities have not yet disclosed the precise nature of the technical failure.
Second incident
The episode marks the second recent incident involving a Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 at Mashhad. On August 25, a Boeing 737-500 operating flight IS-4310 from Tehran to Mashhad, carrying 127 people, veered off the runway after landing. The aircraft’s nose landing gear collapsed, and it came to a stop after leaving runway 13L and ending up on runway 13R. Passengers and crew were unharmed, and Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization launched an investigation into that event.
Videos of the latest cabin ceiling collapse have circulated widely, drawing attention to the airline’s recent operational challenges. While both incidents resulted in no injuries, they have raised questions about maintenance and safety procedures at the carrier. Official investigations into the Tuesday emergency landing are expected to provide further clarity on the sequence of events and any underlying mechanical issues.
