'Greater Representation Of Developing Regions': Russia Backs India's Permanent UNSC Seat Bid At UNGA

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Saturday reiterated Moscow's backing for India's inclusion as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

Addressing the UN General Assembly (UNGA), Lavrov stressed that any structural expansion must focus on developing regions in Asia, Africa, and Latin America while opposing additional seat for Western nations.

"UN Security Council reform cannot involve any additional seats being allocated to Western countries, especially Germany & Japan…We are in favour of broadening the representation of Asia, Africa and Latin America. We support Brazil & India’s candidature for a permanent seat," Lavrov stated.

New Delhi has long sought reforms to the UN body to better reflect contemporary geopolitical realities, a bid that Moscow continues to support.

Global Support Grows For India's UNSC Bid

Portugal and Mauritius have also supported India's bid for a permanent seat on the UNSC, as demands grow to make the UN body reflect present-day geopolitical realities.

Speaking at the UN General Assembly, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro advocated for a more representative Council and backed permanent membership for New Delhi.

Similarly, Mauritian Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful reiterated his country's support, citing India’s constructive contribution to global affairs as a key reason for its candidacy.

UNSC Composition And Amendment Rules

The UN Security Council currently consists of five permanent members with veto power, China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US, alongside 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms.

Restructuring the Council requires approval by a two-thirds majority of the UN General Assembly, followed by formal ratification from two-thirds of all UN member states, including all five permanent members.
