India emerged as Nepal’s biggest international tourism market in September, with 17,425 Indian visitors travelling to the Himalayan country during the month. The figure was 12 per cent higher than the number of Indian tourists recorded in Nepal during September last year.

Nepal reported a total of 88,248 international tourists arriving in the country last month, as per data posted by the tourism department on Friday. The number is higher than 85,444 international tourists arriving in the country in the preceding month, even as floods and landslides caused by the Bhotekoshi River have affected central Nepal.

The latest figures take Nepal’s total international tourist arrivals during the first nine months of 2026 to 8,65,920. This represents a six per cent increase from the 8,15,273 visitors recorded during the corresponding period last year.

Top 5 Tourist Nations

In September, China ranked second in the number of tourists to Nepal with 11,212 visitors, constituting 12.71 per cent of the total tourists in the country. The US stood third with 8,299 visitors (9.4 per cent).

Sri Lanka ranked fourth with 7,108 visitors, contributing 8.05 per cent of the total, while Australia rounded off the top five with 4,842 visitors, accounting for 5.48 per cent.
