Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan's sons accused Pakistan's Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, of killing their father slowly. Raising concerns over Khan's deteriorating health, Kasim Khan, 27, and Sulaiman Khan, 29, claimed that their father is being “slowly killed" in prison. They are sons from Khan's first marriage to Jemima Goldsmith.
They alleged that their father is being subjected to the “cruel" treatment due to a “personal grudge" held by Gen Munir. Sulaiman, speaking to The Guardian, said Khan has been locked in a tiny 6x8ft cell without human contact. He claimed that Khan was deprived of new books and not allowed to speak to his family and a neutral doctor.
Pakistan Court Seeks Record Of Cases Linked To Hospital Transfer
In another development, Pakistan's Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) on Tuesday sought the record of cases linked to the transfer of Khan to a private hospital for treatment from the Supreme Court. The court also sought records of any similar matter taken up by high courts across the country.
The development came as a three-member bench, headed by FCC Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan and comprising Justices Ali Baqar Najafi and Aamer Farooq, heard an appeal by three Adiala jail prisoners who sought the treatment and facilities offered to Khan.
They cited the order by the Supreme Court, which last month directed the authorities to move Khan to private Shifa International Hospital. On the Supreme Court's order, Khan was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) by the authorities instead of private Shifa International Hospital on the pretext of security.
Gatherings Banned In Punjab Amid Planned Protest By Khan's Party
On the other hand, the Punjab government has imposed a ban on all kinds of gatherings across the province until September 17, ahead of a planned protest by Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf party (PTI) in the federal capital. Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sohail Afridi, had announced a tour of 13 cities of Punjab from Monday to garner support for the protest march toward Islamabad on September 27.
Khan has been in jail since August 5, 2023, and his supporters allege that his health has deteriorated due to lack of proper health care, a charge rejected by the jail authorities.
