Panama Earthquake: A massive earthquake with magnitude 7.6 struck off Panama’s southern coast on Friday, prompting the US warning system to issue a Tsunami warning. According to media reports, strong tremors were felt across the capital, Panama City. 

Tsunami Alert For Nine Countries

Hazardous tsunami waves were possible within three hours along some coasts of Panama and Colombia, said the US Tsunami Warning System. An alert was issued for the coastal regions of Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador, Mexico and others.

T earthquake rocked the southern coast of Panama at a 10 km depth, according to the US Geological Survey, which downgraded an earlier estimate of 8.0 magnitude, reported new agency, Reuters.

The US Geological Survey stated a powerful tremors hit Panama on Friday morning, shaking buildings as far away as the capital and prompting evacuations.

The quake was centred near the southern tip of the Central American country, about 14 km southwest of the remote community of Pitaloza Arriba, the USGS said.

Tremors were felt in Panama City, where buildings shook and people evacuated into the streets. Visibly shaken residents gathered outside as they waited for news of the quake's impact.

The USGS said a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred near Pitaloza Arriba, Panama 9 at 12.56 PM local time. The US Geological Survey assessed that extensive shaking impacts are probable, and the disaster is likely widespread.

Approximately 4.6 million people experienced Moderate (MMI V) to Severe (VIII) shaking. Aftershocks, some potentially with strong shaking, may follow this earthquak
