The body of a 50-year-old Hindu jeweller was found inside a floating blue drum in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district on Wednesday. Police suspect he was murdered before his body was disposed of in the water.

The deceased has been identified as Niranjan Chandra Sutradhar, co-owner of a jewellery store in the Atharbari Building area. According to Bangladeshi daily Dainik Ittefaq, police recovered the body near a sluice gate in the Begunbari area after receiving information from local residents.

Victim Identified Through Token

Investigators established the identity of the victim through a token issued by the Mymensingh Hindu Cooperative Credit Union Limited, found in his trouser pocket. They subsequently contacted the cooperative to reach his family. His wife, Sumita Rani Sutradhar, and son, Joy Sutradhar, confirmed his identity on Thursday evening.

Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin of the Kotwali Model Police Station stated that injury marks were found on the body, raising suspicion that Niranjan was killed before being placed inside the blue drum. As of Friday morning, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the crime remains under investigation.

Missing Since September 20

Niranjan, who lived with his family in a rented house in Mymensingh’s Stadium area, had been missing since September 20. While a nephew reported seeing him in the Stadium area the following day, his family did not immediately alert authorities because he had previously stayed away from home for several days.

Political Debate Over Safety Of Minority Communities

The incident comes amid an ongoing political debate over the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh. The Awami League has criticised the BNP-led government, accusing it of failing to protect religious minorities and comparing it to the 2001-2006 period, when the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami were in an alliance government.

However, police have not linked Niranjan's death to his religious identity. Further investigation into the incident is underway.
