  1. Mahrah Al Nahyan sentenced for child neglect in London.
  2. Found unconscious, child unattended near busy road.
  3. Received two-year community order with rehabilitation requirement.

London: Mahrah Al Nahyan, a 32-year-old woman connected to Abu Dhabi’s ruling royal family through marriage, has been sentenced in the United Kingdom after admitting to child neglect. The case came to light after she was found unconscious on a west London street while a three-year-old child in her care was playing barefoot near a busy road.

According to reports of the court proceedings, the incident took place on Wednesday. Passers-by noticed the unattended child near moving traffic and stepped in to ensure the toddler’s safety before alerting the authorities.

Al Nahyan appeared before Southwark Crown Court, where she admitted one charge of child neglect. The court subsequently imposed a two-year community order, including a rehabilitation requirement, and ordered her to pay £6,114 in fines and costs.

What Happened in London?

The court heard that Al Nahyan was found slumped against railings alongside an unconscious man. The young child was nearby with a scooter and had no shoes on.

Members of the public intervened after becoming concerned about the child’s proximity to traffic. Al Nahyan reportedly remained unresponsive for around 30 minutes after being discovered.

Prosecutors said the child could have been seriously harmed without the intervention of passers-by. The court also heard that the child had moved towards the road while chasing a piece of paper before a member of the public intervened.

Police reportedly found drug-related paraphernalia in Al Nahyan’s belongings, although no illegal substances were recovered.

What Did Her Lawyer Say?

Defence barrister Stephen Vullo KC told the court that Al Nahyan had not taken drugs on the day she was found unconscious. He said she was exhausted following cocaine use in the preceding days.

Her lawyer also told the court that she had shown remorse and was determined to address her substance-use problems. Reports said she had been receiving treatment at the Priory rehabilitation centre in Woking, Surrey.

The defence indicated that she intended to complete a treatment programme and continue recovery support after leaving the facility.

What Sentence Did Mahrah Al Nahyan Receive?

The court sentenced Al Nahyan to a two-year community order with a mandatory rehabilitation requirement. She was also ordered to pay a total of £6,114 in fines and costs.

During sentencing, the judge highlighted the danger the child had faced while left without adequate supervision. The court noted that the intervention of members of the public had helped prevent a potentially serious outcome.

Who Is Mahrah Al Nahyan?

Mahrah Al Nahyan, 32, is associated through marriage with Abu Dhabi’s ruling Al Nahyan family, one of the most influential royal dynasties in the United Arab Emirates.

The Al Nahyan family governs Abu Dhabi, the UAE’s largest emirate and the country’s political centre. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the ruler of Abu Dhabi, is also the president of the United Arab Emirates.

The case has attracted international attention because of Al Nahyan’s royal connections and the circumstances surrounding the child-neglect offence.

The court proceedings have focused primarily on the child’s safety, the circumstances of the incident and Al Nahyan’s subsequent efforts to seek treatment.
