At least four people were killed, and eight were injured near Mersin, in southern Turkey, when a gunman opened fire, reported AFP. The attack is reported to have started inside a restaurant, where two people died on the spot when the assailant shot restaurant clients and workers.

DHA and IHA reported that two others died in separate parts of the city as the shooting went on.

Manhunt Launched

The incident is reported to have occurred north of Tarsus, a location some 40 km from Mersin, which was swift to implement an operation. Police forces mobilised in massive numbers and were using helicopters, attempting to track down a gunman in a car.

The gunman is reportedly a 17-year-old who had a shotgun on his person, DHA report.

Eight were injured in the attack; no information is given about the severity of the wounds, but a lot of medical assistance seemed to be on hand around different points in the city. Ambulances were seen, and victims rushed to local hospitals.

Motive Under Scanner

No names for the victim have been released, and no motive is believed to be apparent from this incident at the moment, with authorities trying to determine whether it was chosen at random or selected for other reasons.

The incident comes at a time when concerns are rife across Turkey about a recent series of deadly assaults carried out by teenagers. Last month, two separate shooting incidents resulted in numerous fatalities and injuries across two different regions of Turkey.
