The earthquake registered a lower 5 intensity on Japan's seven-point seismic scale in Tokyo's Adachi Ward, as well as parts of Ibaraki, Saitama, and Chiba prefectures. Level 4 shaking was recorded in other areas of Tokyo as well as Tochigi, Gunma, and Kanagawa prefectures.

According to NHK, Level 2 long-period ground motion occurred in Kawaguchi, Urayasu, and Tokyo's Koto and Edogawa wards. This type of slow, prolonged motion can cause high-rise buildings to sway, making it hard to stand and causing furniture or other objects to move or fall, Japan Times reported.

Devastating 7.1 Kumamoto Earthquake

This latest 5.8 magnitude quake comes just weeks after a devastating 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Kumamoto area on Japan's southern main island of Kyushu on July 28. The quake killed at least 18 people, including one foreign national, and injured 62 others, six of them seriously, according to the prefectural government.

The death toll rose steadily in the aftermath of the earthquake as emergency workers searched damaged buildings and collapsed homes for survivors.

Heavy destruction was reported at the Aeon Mall in Kashima, which was crowded with thousands of shoppers when the earthquake struck. Approximately 3,000 customers were evacuated to a nearby parking lot shortly before a gas explosion rocked another part of the mall where staff were still present.

The blast caused the mall's second floor to collapse, trapping people inside. Witnesses stated the explosion shook the area as violently as the earthquake itself. Aeon President Akio Yoshida confirmed four deaths at the mall site, while three people were initially reported missing.
