Iran War 2026: The war between Iran and the joint forces of Israel and the US has led to an energy crisis across the world, especially in the Asian countries. The ship movement through the Strait of Hormuz has been affected, leading to a significant surge in prices of the crude. The war in the Middle East has also exposed the overdependence on the 'five straits' system for energy flow between Europe and Asia. These five chokepoints carry an average of 60 million barrels of crude oil daily, and even a minor disruption leads to a price surge.
Along with Hormuz, the world is heavily dependent on other chokepoints for energy flow, including the Bab al-Mandab, the Strait of Malacca, the Suez Canal, and the Turkish straits. While the Bab al-Mandab in the Arabian Peninsula is crucial for the ships passing through the Red Sea, the Strait of Malacca connects the Indian and Pacific oceans. Apart from this, the Suez Canal links the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, and the Turkish straits connect the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.

Bab al-Mandab Strait
- Connects the Red Sea to the Arabian Sea
- Around 10 per cent of the world's seaborne crude is shipped via this chokepoint
- Houthis, the Iranian-backed group, have affected ship movement on several occasions
Strait of Malacca
- It is the busiest route and handles between 22 and 29 per cent of global crude flow
- The chokepoint witnesses a flow of 23-24 million barrels of crude on a daily basis
- It recorded 82 per cent of all maritime piracy reported in Asia
Suez Canal
- It connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea
- The Suez Canal carries around 10 per cent of the world's seaborne oil
- The Houthis affect the ships' movement through this chokepoint too, leading to crisis
Turkish Straits
- The chokepoint connects the Mediterranean to the Black Sea
- It handles around three million barrels of oil daily
- Any disruption leads to a surge in prices in the European nations
