As US Vice President JD Vance heads to Islamabad for the second round of Iran-US peace talks, media reports suggest that President Donald Trump could also attend the negotiations. According to a report by news agency Reuters, Trump may participate in the meeting either in person or virtually, but only if a deal is close to being signed between the two countries. However, no official announcement has yet been made by either the White House or host nation Pakistan.

Earlier on Monday, Axios reported that Vance will travel to Pakistan on Tuesday for the negotiations. The Wall Street Journal said that Iran had informed regional mediators it would send a delegation to Pakistan on Tuesday. Tehran, however, maintained that it would not negotiate under pressure and expressed displeasure over Trump’s aggressive remarks on social media.

If media reports are to be believed, a key question arises: can the US President and Vice President travel abroad at the same time? The answer is yes. While they usually travel on separate aircraft for security reasons to ensure “continuity of government,” there is no legal or constitutional rule preventing them from being abroad simultaneously.

Richard Dykema, a former chief of staff, said there is nothing unusual about this, as the President exercises presidential powers regardless of where he is in the world.

He noted that people often confuse this with the situation in some US states, where, when the Governor leaves the state, the Lieutenant Governor becomes Acting Governor until the Governor returns. “In such states, someone else would need to be designated as Acting Governor if both the Governor and Lieutenant Governor were absent from the state at the same time,” Dykema said.

Pakistan is preparing for talks that might not happen

Pakistan geared up to host the talks despite uncertainty over whether they would go ahead. Nearly 20,000 security personnel have been deployed across Islamabad, a government official and a security official told Reuters.
