The high-stakes peace talks between the United States and Iran are scheduled to take place today. Delegations from both countries have arrived in Islamabad, marking the first in-person contact since the outbreak of the conflict on February 28. Following the announcement of a two-week ceasefire on April 7, representatives from both countries will now negotiate to finalise the agreement, while holding distinct objectives.

Tehran seeks to include Lebanon in the peace accord and aims to maintain its control over the Strait of Hormuz, which was effectively blocked during the conflict. On the other hand, Washington, conversely, seeks to curtail Iran’s nuclear enrichment activities and military capabilities. Pakistan is acting as a mediator to facilitate talks between the two countries.

What Are Iran's Demands?

The two nations have divergent goals regarding the ceasefire negotiations. Iran demands that the US withdraw its troops from all its military bases in the region. It also insists on continuing its ballistic missile program and wants acceptance of Uranium enrichment. Iran further seeks to retain control over the Strait of Hormuz and is considering levying a fee of USD 1 per barrel on all vessels transiting through this vital waterway.

While several countries have voiced opposition to toll stipulation, its implementation would grant Iran a significant economic and strategic advantage within the region. Tehran also seeks a "Non-Aggression Pact" to pre-empt any potential future attacks by the United States.

Additionally, it demands an end to ongoing hostilities across all fronts, including in Lebanon. It seeks the removal of all US sanctions, as well as broader international restrictions. Moreover, it demands reconstruction assistance and reparations for damages incurred during past attacks.

What Are the US Demands?

The US largely seeks to curb Iran's military and nuclear capabilities. Washington has insisted that Tehran completely halt uranium enrichment and relinquish its stockpile of enriched uranium. It also demands that Iran cease its support to allied terrorist groups in the region. Additionally, Washington seeks unrestricted global access through the Strait of Hormuz. The US also intends to maintain its military presence in the region until a stable agreement is reached.

The opposing goals and demands of the two nations cast a doubt on the success of Islamabad Talks 2026. It is also not clear whether Lebanon would be discussed in the meeting.
