Iran War 2026: The war between Iran and the joint forces of Israel and the US has led to a severe energy crisis across the world, especially in the Asian countries. The movement of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz has been affected due to the military conflict, leading to a significant surge in the prices of crude. The experts have also pointed out that the prolonged war can also affect internet availability in several countries. They stated that the undersea cables, passing through the Hormuz, are critical for digital connectivity.
While Iran has not issued any direct threat to undersea fiber-optic cables, the safety of undersea cables running through the chokepoint is under threat as the war has been ongoing for over a month. The Houthis, Iran's ally in Yemen, have threatened to damage the cables passing through the Red Sea on multiple occasions.

The prolonged military conflict can lead to an internet crisis, especially in the Asian countries. As per the International Telecommunication Union, about 99 per cent of the internet traffic goes through submarine cables. The experts pointed out that any disruption can affect the internet speed.
"It is not as if the internet will ever be shut down, but it could get slowed down," Amajit Gupta, Chief Executive and Managing Director at Lightstorm Telecom Connectivity Pvt. Ltd, was quoted as saying by Mint. "If this choking continues to happen over a period of time and the traffic on the internet continues to grow over a period of time, then at a certain point the choke effect will be much more visible," he added.
Will It Affect India?
- India is heavily dependent on the cables passing through the Hormuz
- About 60 per cent of India's internet traffic is handled on the link passing through the chokepoint
- The cables, passing through the Hormuz, connect Mumbai to Europe
