Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has retained its title as the world's busiest airport for passenger traffic for most of the past 27 years. This is due to its strategic location, extensive flight network and efficient operations. However, in 2020, it missed the title of the busiest airport due to the covid pandemic.
Located in the US state of Georgia, the airport serves as one of the most important aviation hubs in the world, connecting millions of travellers to domestic and international destinations each year. Its position in the southeastern United States allows airlines to efficiently link passengers from smaller cities to destinations across North America and beyond.
Why has Atlanta International Airport retained its title?
One of the biggest reasons behind Atlanta's long-standing dominance is its role as the primary hub for Delta Air Lines, one of the world's largest carriers. Delta operates hundreds of daily flights from Atlanta, making the airport a major transit point for passengers travelling across the United States and internationally. Many travellers who do not begin or end their journey in Atlanta pass through the airport during connecting flights, significantly boosting its passenger numbers.

The airport's geographical advantage also plays a crucial role. A large proportion of the US population lives within a short flight from Atlanta, making it an ideal location for airlines using the hub-and-spoke model.
