United States President Donald Trump on Saturday stated Washington is “winding down” its military operations in the Middle East, while ruling out a ceasefire. He listed five objectives that the US is close to achieving in its conflict with Iran that has entered its 22nd day. This development comes after Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei claimed victory over the US and Israel in a Nowruz message.

The ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran continues to increase tensions in the Middle East, with growing calls for peace. The war, which has already affected global energy supplies and drawn several Gulf countries into the conflict, has seen significant shifts in US statements regarding its objectives and timeline. Trump and his officials have repeatedly described the objectives of US military actions in Iran, all of which have changed over the weeks.

Trump's changing goals

Trump's recent statement marks a shift from earlier statements that focused on regime change and internal uprising. However, his list of five objectives now appears to make consolidating gains rather than escalating toward open-ended war. In a post on Truth Social, Trump outlined five main goals which are to completely degrade Iran’s missile capabilities, launchers, and related systems, destroy Iran’s defence industrial base, eliminate the Iranian Navy and Air Force, including anti-aircraft weapons, prevent Iran from achieving nuclear capability while remaining ready to respond if needed and protect Middle Eastern allies, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

Shift In US' Goals

Earlier in the conflict, Trump’s statements focused on urging internal uprising in Iran, toppling the government, and claiming “unconditional surrender.” However, even after killing former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior Iranian figures, the US wasn't able to overthrow the regime. Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed as the new Supreme Leader to lead the country and Islamic Republic continues to rule Iran.

US To Protect Allies

Trump's new objectives also mention the US' priority to protect Gulf countries which have been indirectly drawn into the conflict after they came under Iran's retaliatory attack. At the beginning of the conflict on February 28, Trump didn't mention involvement of Gulf countries or the need to protect "Middle Eastern allies." However, after three weeks, this has changed and the US now aims to protect Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait, whose critical infrastructure were targetted.

Varying Timelines For The War

Trump also gave varying timelines for the war. Initially, he suggested the war could last four weeks or less, then extended it to four to five weeks, and later admitted it could go on longer. Pentagon officials, including US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, said no fixed end date was set, and Trump would decide when objectives were achieved. However, Trump recently indicated that the US was “very close” to meeting its objectives.

Moreover, US officials have also given different reasons for the strikes. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington acted to preempt Israeli attacks, while Trump claimed US forces joined because Iran was about to strike first.
