India's Defence Strategy: In view of the dual security challenge posed by China and Pakistan, India is continuously strengthening its military strategy and conventional warfare capabilities amid rapidly changing geopolitics.
An international report states that long-standing tensions and border disputes with both nuclear-armed neighbours have compelled India to increase its preparedness for large-scale military operations.
India's Defence Strategy
According to the Asia-Pacific Regional Security Assessment Report of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), Pakistan and China remain the focus of India's security concerns. The report states that any future major conflict may be limited and regional in nature, but despite this, India is continuously modernising and aggressively developing its military preparations.
What Did IISS Report Say?
According to the IISS report, cross-border terrorism and persistent tensions with Pakistan have influenced India's military thinking. Actions such as the 2016 surgical strike, the 2019 Balakot operation, and the 2025 Operation Sindoor have indicated that India now views the scope of counterterrorism as broader than ever before.
The IISS states that the experiences gained from these military operations are being incorporated into Indian military doctrine, strengthening both the army's operational capabilities and strategic preparedness. According to the report, India is now working on a strategy to deal with a "neither war nor peace" situation, given the persistent tensions along its borders with China and Pakistan.
The report also states that India's conflict with China has largely been limited to border and military deployments, but growing Chinese activity in the Indian Ocean region and the Asia-Pacific is posing a new strategic challenge for India. Consequently, India is continuously expanding its military presence and preparedness.
India's Distance From US-China Confrontation
However, the report believes that India's military role outside the Indian Ocean region may remain limited and it will try to maintain distance from the US-China conflict over Taiwan. The report states that India's military doctrine is now evolving to suit the rapidly changing security environment.
