'Forced To Work 15 Hours A Day, No Salary For 4 Months': Hyderabad Woman Alleges Abuse In Oman, Seeks Embassy Help

An Indian woman from Hyderabad, who travelled to Muscat, Oman, for a domestic worker's job, has alleged that she was subjected to severe abuse, forced to work long hours without pay, and denied food by her employer.

The woman, identified as Shabnam Begum from Telangana, alleged that she was forced to work a minimum of 15 hours a day, physically abused, denied food and her salary for over four months.

"They also didn't give me a mobile phone for a month and a half,"  she said in an emotional video to a Hyderabad politician.

Went To Oman On March 26

In an emotional video sent to Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) leader Amjed Ullah Khan, Shabnam stated that she flew to Oman on March 26 following assurances from a local recruitment agent who assured her a domestic job with a salary of 200 Omani riyals per month (approximately Rs 50,000).

"After reaching Oman, she was allegedly forced to work in different houses for 12-15 hours daily, denied proper food and accommodation, and was not paid any salary for four months," he wrote on X and posted her video appeal.

MBT Demands Action Against Recruitment Agent

Amjed Ullah Khan accused that Shabnam was lured to Oman with false promises of a job and asked the Government to take measures for her safe return to India and punish the agent. He has also demanded strict action against the recruitment agent who allegedly sent her abroad under misleading assurances.

Indian Embassy Steps In

Unable to bear the alleged abuse, Shabnam fled from the residence of her employer to reach the Indian Embassy in Muscat. She further alleged that her passport was seized by the recruitment agent.

Shabnam's family requested External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to direct the Indian Embassy in Muscat to ensure her safety and arrange for her immediate return to Hyderabad. The Indian Embassy in Muscat acknowledged the matter and confirmed that it had taken cognisance of the case and initiated the necessary action.

“The embassy has taken cognisance of the matter and is being taken up at appropriate levels,” the Indian Embassy’s statement read.
