- Attempted to hijack medical helicopter at scene.
- Faces charges for resisting officers and helicopter break-in.
A car accident in Florida took a very strange turn when the driver who caused the crash tried to steal the medical helicopter sent to help the victims. According to police reports, 28-year-old Riley Ferrer was driving his pickup truck north on Interstate 75 in Hernando County around midnight on a Friday. Suddenly, he lost control of his vehicle. The truck veered off the road, hit another car, and flipped over into the nearby woods. Two people inside the second car were severely injured in the impact.
What happened when rescue officials arrived at accident site
To help the injured passengers, emergency workers completely shut down the northbound lanes of the highway so a "BayFlight" medical helicopter could land safely on the road. However, as medical crews were carefully loading the injured victims into the helicopter, Ferrer unexpectedly ran past the first responders and tried to climb inside the aircraft to take it over, according to a report by The New York Post.
Police stated that Ferrer’s behavior at the scene was highly unstable. He refused to answer basic questions and claimed he had seen "the anti-Christ" right before the crash happened. Later, when authorities took him to Tampa General Hospital Brooksville to ensure he was not badly hurt, he refused to walk inside. Police officers had to physically carry him into the building and force him to remain seated during his medical evaluation.
Once doctors cleared him, Ferrer was taken to the Hernando County Detention Center. Authorities noted that his erratic behavior continued, and he kept fighting against jail deputies while they were trying to process and book him.
Driver is in legal trouble
Ferrer is now facing serious legal trouble. He has been charged with three counts of resisting an officer without violence and one count of breaking into an occupied vehicle (the helicopter). While his bail has been set at USD 3,000 for the resisting charges, he is currently being held in jail without any bond for the vehicle break-in charge. The medical status of the two injured victims has not yet been shared with the public.
