The global attention has shifted to high-stakes in-person talks between the United States and Iran, hosted by Pakistan on Saturday. The meeting aims to extend the ceasefire and prevent further escalation in the Middle East conflict. Delegations from both countries have reached Islamabad, and all eyes are on what would be the outcome of this major diplomatic moment.
Amid growing uncertainty over the result of Iran-US peace talks, there lies a question about what Washington plans to do if the meeting fails to reach consensus? Before leaving for Islamabad on Friday, US Vice President JD Vance said that Washington is open to talks if Tehran negotiates in good faith. He added that the US wants a “positive negotiation,” but warned that if Iran tries to mislead them, the US team will not be receptive.

Does US Have A Backup Plan?
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump also indicated plans to reopen the Gulf region, while asserting that Washington would move ahead "with or without" negotiations. He announced that there is no backup plan if the talks with Iran fail, as Tehran’s military is already “defeated.” Trump said, “You don't need a backup plan. Their military is defeated. We have integrated everything. They have very few missiles. They have very few manufacturing capabilities. We hit them very hard. Our military is amazing; the job they have done.”
Trump Warns Of Moving Ahead 'With Or Without' Deal
Earlier on Friday, speaking at Joint Base Andrews (JBA) before Vance's departure, Trump asserted that the Strait of Hormuz will be reopened regardless of the outcome of the talks. "Well, I wish them luck. He's got a big thing. I'll find out what's going on. They're militarily defeated, and now we're going to open up the gulf (Strait of Hormuz) with or without a deal. But that'll be open, we're going to be on the straight as they call it,” he said.
This diplomatic moment is closely watched by everyone as both sides have already accused each other of breaching the ceasefire agreement. It is expected that the primary focus of the talks will be the 15-point proposal sent to Iran by the US, to which Tehran has responded with a 10-point counter-proposal. However, it remains unclear whether the issue of Lebanon will be formally discussed.
