After naming Pakistan as the country that urged him to show restraint before his planned military strike on Iran, US President Donald Trump said he believes China played a key role in pushing Tehran to negotiate. The development comes after Trump announced a temporary ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Iran, just hours before his “Tuesday deadline,” agreeing to pause bombing and military attacks for two weeks.
Did China Ask Iran To Negotiate With US?
In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasised that his decision came after talks with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir, who urged restraint. However, in an interview to news agency AFP, Trump said he had heard that China helped bring Iran to the negotiating table for a two-week ceasefire agreement. “I hear yes,” he said when asked if Beijing was involved. He described the deal as a “total and complete victory,” adding, “100 percent.
Trump’s remark on involvement of China indicates Beijing’s quiet and behind-the-scenes role in easing tensions in the six-week-old conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran. While China, Iran’s largest trading partner, has not officially confirmed its role, its diplomats had earlier indicated efforts to de-escalate the situation
China's Stance Through War
The Chinese Embassy in Washington earlier said Beijing has been working "tirelessly for peace" since the outbreak of the war. Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry expressing concern over the global economy and energy, said all sides must act with sincerity and end a war “that should not have happened.”
On Tuesday, China took assertive positions on the global stage after it vetoed a UN resolution calling for coordinated efforts to protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. China’s UN envoy stated that passing such a resolution while the US was making strong military threats would send the wrong message.
China is highly concerned over the military strikes against Iran launched by the U.S. and Israel. Iran’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity should be respected.
