A lyric change during a recent performance in Wuhan, China, has landed popular comedian Guo Degang in trouble, with authorities now investigating the incident. Several of his scheduled shows have also reportedly been cancelled.

During a performance in late July, Guo reportedly changed the line “Peace beside Weishan Lake” from the popular revolutionary song Playing My Beloved Pipa to “Peace beside the Forbidden City.”

A video of the performance later circulated on social media, prompting a complaint to Wuhan’s culture and tourism authorities.

Why Did The Lyric Change Trigger A Probe?

The complaint accused Guo of “distorting and vulgarising” the revolutionary song. His Wuhan show had reportedly received approval from authorities, but the altered lyric was allegedly not part of the approved performance.

Playing My Beloved Pipa was written in 1956 for the film Railway Guerrillas, which depicted Chinese resistance fighters battling Japanese forces during World War II.
