Amid escalating tensions with Iran, United States President Donald Trump has found himself embroiled in controversy. Several US senators have condemned Trump for his warning to Iran on Sunday, that was said to be expletive in nature. They are reportedly considering invoking the 25th Amendment of the US constitution to remove him from office.

Lawmakers Call On To Remove Trump

Minority Leader of the US Senate, Chuck Schumer remarked that Trump ranted like an "unhinged madman" on social media. He stated the country deserves a "much better" leader than him to run the US. In a post on X, he wrote, “The President of the United States is ranting like an unhinged madman on social media. He’s threatening possible war crimes and alienating allies. This is who he is, but this is not who we are. Our country deserves so much better.”

Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar also said that Trump must be removed from office. She wrote, "This is not ok. Invoke the 25th amendment. Impeach. Remove. This unhinged lunatic must be removed from office."

What Is The 25th Amendment?

Formalised in 1967, the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution outlines procedures for presidential succession, vice-presidential vacancies, and declaring a president unfit or “incapacitated.” It allows the Vice President and most of the Cabinet to declare the president unable to discharge duties. During this period, the Vice President assumes the role of the President.

The 25th Amendment was enacted following the assassination of former US President John F Kennedy, when a state of confusion arose regarding the line of succession. It was first invoked in 1973, when Gerald Ford was nominated to the vice presidency following the resignation of Vice President Spiro T Agnew.

Can Trump Be Removed?

While some senators may have demanded invoking the 25th amendment, the majority of the cabinet, including Vice President JD Vance have not indicated any such plan.

Trump came under opposition’s attack after he threatened to attack Iranian civilian infrastructure, including bridges and power plants, if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened by Tuesday. He wrote on Truth Social, “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH!"
