'Their Faces Had Been Burnt': Relatives Share Chilling Details In Bangladesh Hindu Family Murder

Bangladesh: A Hindu family of four was found murdered inside their locked home in Bangladesh's Rangpur city on Saturday night. Authorities recovered the bodies of 65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, a retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher, his 50-year-old wife Pritilata, their 23-year-old daughter Agami, and their 12-year-old son Priyam from their home in the Daspara (Machhuapara) area at around 11:30 PM.

As the investigation continues, police have uncovered chilling details surrounding the killings, including an alleged attempt by the suspects to destroy evidence and cover their tracks before fleeing the scene.

Victims' Faces Burnt With Flammable Chemical

Relatives of the deceased said that the victims' faces were severely burned when the bodies were handed over to them.

"When we received the bodies in the evening, we found that their faces had been burned. Earlier, police did not allow us to go near the bodies," said Puja Chakraborty, younger sister of Pritilata Chakraborty, while speaking to Bangladesh's The Daily Star.

Confirming the family's account, Sumit Chowdhury, acting superintendent of police for CID Rangpur, said that investigators suspect a flammable substance was used on the victims' faces.

"The killers appear to have poured a flammable substance on the victims' faces either before or after killing them," Chowdhury said. "At this stage, we cannot say what substance was used. The investigating officer will collect samples and send them to the CID forensic department for examination. We will know more once the test results are available," he added.

Bodies Found Scattered Across House

The bodies were found in different parts of the house. The mother and daughter were found on the staircase, Ganapati's body was recovered from the roof, and 12-year-old Priyam was found under a bed. Police initially suspected that the victims were strangled between midnight Thursday and early Friday morning.

Puja said the family had been unreachable since Thursday, with all their phones switched off, prompting police to break open the locked main gate to enter the premises.

Accused Remained Inside House To Stage Cover-Up

According to Prothom Alo, suspects Mugdha and Siddhartha allegedly stayed inside the house after the killings. They reportedly bathed, ate dates and cucumbers from the refrigerator, and used yaba before leaving on Friday during Jummah prayers.

To make the crime appear as a robbery, cupboards were opened and belongings scattered. Investigators found evidence suggesting an attempt to test a gold bangle with fire, while two of the victims' phones were submerged in water mixed with detergent in an apparent attempt to destroy evidence.

Police detained the suspects based on clues, and the duo allegedly confessed during questioning. Officers later recovered gold jewellery believed to have been stolen from an abandoned location identified by the suspects. Date pits found inside the house have been sent for DNA testing.

Teams from the local police, CID, and Detective Branch are jointly investigating the case, and preparations are underway to file a murder case.
