Bangladesh Election Result 2026: The country's interim chief, Muhammad Yunus congratulates the nation after voting ends. The Nobel Peace Prize winner was appointed the Chief Adviser of the country's interim government after the Sheikh Hasina government fell in August 2024. Today's elections are set to bring an end to his 18-month tenure.

Yunus hails the polls as "the beginning of an unprecedented journey toward a new Bangladesh". He lauds the voters, political parties, candidates and all institutions after the conclusion of a largely peaceful polls. "I express special thanks to the Election Commission, law enforcement agencies, the armed forces, the administration, observer teams, media personnel, and all officials involved in conducting the polls. Their dedication and hard work ensured the successful completion of this large democratic exercise," says Yunus.

Ousted PM Sheikh Hasina's Awami League calls the Bangladesh election 'a farce' as it alleges that the "outcome appears predetermined". "In Valuka, Mymensingh, reports allege that after a quiet day with low voter presence, ballot stamping intensified later in the afternoon — raising fresh questions about the credibility of the process," it said in a post on X.

"When ballot boxes fill without visible voter participation, people are left asking: whose mandate is this? Many across Bangladesh have voiced rejection of what they call an illegitimate election," the Awami League said.,

India received official invitation to send observers to Bangladesh to monitor the elections, says Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. However, India opted out of it.

"We should wait for the outcome of the elections to see as to what sort of mandate has come out and thereafter we will look at issues that are there. On the election per se, you know what our position has been. We stand for a free, fair, inclusive and credible elections in Bangladesh," he said.

Tarique Rahman is one of the presidential candidates of Bangladesh. He was born on November 20, 1965, in Dhaka to Khaleda Zia and former President Ziaur Rahman, the founder of the BNP. Tarique recently returned to Bangladesh, ending his two decades of self-imposed exile in London. The 2024 Bangladesh Elections, held during Sheikh Hasina's rule, witnessed major opposition boycotts over allegations of rigged elections. The Awami League won their fourth consecutive elections as it secured 224 seats. The nation recorded a voter turnout of 40 per cent.

Sheikh Hasina, who ruled over Bangladesh for 15 years, did not participate in the elections as she is exile in India. Her party Awami League was disbanded and barred from contesting polls.

The opinion polls show BNP ahead of the Islamist Jamaat-E-Islami. BNP's Tarique Rahman is up against Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman for the prime ministerial role.

The outcome of the Bangladesh Election 2026 are expected to be declared on Friday morning.

Bangladesh, the eighth most populous country in the world with 175 million people, looks to establish a strong government which would pull the nation out of the economic slump and restore key industries, including the garments sector. Bangladesh is the world's second-largest exporter of garments.

As Bangladesh looks to elect a stable government, it recorded higher voter turnout as compared to the last general elections held in 2024. While the final voter turnout is awaited, the data till 2 PM already showed higher turnout at 48 per cent. The 2024 Bangladesh elections logged 42 per cent total voter turnout. 

According to the latest data provided by Akhtar Ahmed, senior secretary of the Election Commission, nearly half the electorate voted at 36,031 of the 42,651 polling centres by 2 PM.

The polling for high-stake Bangladesh elections comes to an end at 4.30 PM. The counting of votes will begin soon and the results are expected to be declared tomorrow.

Bangladesh Elections were marred by several reports of malpractices as officials recovered over 100 ballot paper already stamped for the BNP at a polling station in Sherpur 1. In Meghna, two local BNP leaders were detained by army for blocking entry of rival agents and distributing cash. In Chuadanga, a local Jamaat leader was detained outside a voting centre with a huge amount of money.

A voter turnout of 32.88 per cent was logged by noon at about three-fourths of the 42,651 polling centres across the country, Reuters cites EC official Akhtar Ahmed.

The Bangladesh Elections are set to see the Gen-Z and women voters play a key role in electing the government. According to a report by The Dhaka Tribune, these two voter blocs form a numerical majority with over 40 million voters aged between 18 and 29 years and over 62 million female voters. They are being considered capable for influencing conventional party calculations and electoral strategies.

A 60-year-old BNP leader, Mohibuzzaman Kochi, died at a polling station in Khulna. According to Bangla daily Prothom Alo, BNP allege that the leader died after he was pushed by rival Jamaat workers. They claim that Kochi was opposing seeking votes inside the polling center when the clash took place.

While Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin asserts that the Bangladesh Elections 2026 were being held in a free, fair and peaceful environment, national media reports allegations of pre-poll vote stuffing, voter bribing and distribution of photocopied ballot papers. There are also reports of violence as rival candidates clashed leading to arrests of several activists.

Bangladesh's interim chief Muhammad Yunus, and key contenders BNP's Tarique Rahman and Jamaat's Shafiqur Rahman cast their votes as the elections got underway. Rahman hailed the Bangladesh polls as the day much-awaited by the citizens. He further promised that if elected to power, his government "will lay priority to improving law and order in the country so that people feel secure". After casting his vote, Shafiqur Rahmad said his party would accept the election results if the polling was conducted fairly.

Along with the parliamentary election, Bangladesh is also holding a referendum on the National Charter 2025 drafted by the interim government to determine the foundation for future governance. The document reportedly contains a complex 84-point reform package introduced by interim chief Muhammad Yunus.
