Amid the West Asia crisis, India's National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval visited Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh. The visit holds significance amid mounting concerns surrounding oil supplies to India and other countries. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical narrow passage crucial for the oil flow, has been closed following the ongoing conflict between Iran and US.

Doval arrived in Riyadh on Sunday. He was welcomed by Saudi Arabia's Deputy Minister of Political Affairs Saud al-Sati. The NSA then met Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman, Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan, and National Security Advisor Musaid al-Aiban. As per the Indian Embassy, bilateral relations, regional situation, and issues of mutual interest were discussed during these meetings.

Special Emphasis On Energy Security

Doval's visit is considered important and crucial for India's energy security. The main objective of these meetings was to assess the impact of the evolving West Asia crisis and discuss future strategies.

India imports approximately 40 per cent of its oil needs from Gulf countries. Any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could lead to higher fuel prices and supply disruptions. Therefore, India is in constant contact with major oil-producing countries and monitoring the situation.

Oil Prices Surge

Tensions between the US and Iran have also escalated. The US recently seized an Iranian ship, further escalating the situation. According to US President Donald Trump, the ship refused to stop despite warnings, leading to the action. Following this development, global oil prices surged, with Brent crude prices nearing USD 100 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate also saw a rise.
