A Pakistani national married to an Indian man has been sent to 14 days’ judicial custody in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly obtaining a fake voter ID card. The accused, identified as Saba Farhat alias Nazi alias Nazia, is married to Farhat Masood, a resident of Nadir Ali Building in Jali Kothi. The couple has three children. Police said Saba holds a Pakistani passport valid until 2032 and an Indian long-term visa valid until 2027, and therefore has not been charged with illegal stay.
According to the complaint filed by Ruksana, a resident of Kothi Atanas in Delhi Gate, Farhat Masood had married Pakistani citizen Saba Farhat in Pakistan in 1988. In 1993, Saba went to Pakistan and gave birth to her fourth daughter, Aiman Farhat, on May 25, 1993.
She later returned to India after entering Aiman’s name in her Pakistani passport. Aiman was admitted to a reputed school in the Cantonment area but was not granted Indian citizenship. Both Saba and Aiman continue to hold Pakistani citizenship. Aiman now practices as a lawyer in the Meerut court.
Police alleged that Saba prepared forged documents to obtain a fake passport for Aiman and also managed to create two voter entries under the names Saba Masood and Nazia Masood, both allegedly referring to her.
On Tuesday, Delhi Gate police produced Saba in court, where she was remanded to 14 days in judicial custody after arguments from both the defence and the prosecution. While Saba has been booked for preparing a fake voter ID, her daughter Aiman has not been named as an accused in the case diary.
