Washington Post publisher and CEO Will Lewis abruptly resigned days after the newspaper cut one-third of its workforce. In an internal email, the 56-year-old journalist informed the staff about his decision by describing it as the "right time" to step down. Lewis thanked Jeff Bezos, the owner of The Washington Post, for his support in a two-paragraph email to the staff. The newspaper has appointed Jeff D'Onofrio, the chief financial officer, as temporary publisher.
Will Lewis' Resignation Email
In his resignation email, Lewis asserted that some difficult decisions were taken during his tenure, adding that the newspaper could not have a better owner than Jeff Bezos. "All - after two years of transformation at The Washington Post, now is the right time for me to step aside. I want to thank Jeff Bezos for his support and leadership throughout my tenure as CEO and Publisher. The institution could not have a better owner," Lewis stated.
"During my tenure, difficult decisions have been taken in order to ensure the sustainable future of The Post so it can for many years ahead publish high-quality nonpartisan news to millions of customers each day. With gratitude, Will," he added.
Earlier on February 4, the Washington Post announced several cost-cutting measures, including the controversial layoffs of over 300 journalists and the closure of several sections. The decision was taken after the departure of several prominent journalists and a sharp decline in subscribers in recent years.
