A bizarre conspiracy theory claiming that disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein is alive and secretly playing the popular video game Fortnite has taken off across social media platforms, despite clear official denials and easily verifiable facts. The speculation began after users flagged a reference in recently unsealed Epstein-related documents to a YouTube account with the username “littlestjeff1.” An email from May 7, 2019, included in the files showed a purchase of USD 25.95 worth of Fortnite’s in-game currency, V-Bucks.

This detail was quickly seized upon online, with some users claiming they had found an active Fortnite account using the same username and showing gameplay statistics from periods after Epstein’s death.

One viral post claimed that the “littlestjeff1” Fortnite account was ranked Silver 1 in Chapter 5, Season 1, a season released years after Epstein was officially declared dead in August 2019. The post suggested this was proof that Epstein had faked his death and was living abroad, with some users even pointing to Israel as the account’s displayed location.

The theory spread rapidly on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X, amplified by unverified accounts and conspiracy-focused pages. Former US Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene also reposted a version of the claim, lending it wider visibility and prompting further speculation.

Epic Games Steps In To Debunk Rumour

Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite, swiftly debunked the rumours. In a statement posted on X, the official Fortnite account said the episode was the result of a deliberate hoax by a player. According to Epic Games, an existing Fortnite user changed their username to “littlestjeff1” only after the name appeared in the Epstein files.

“These Fortnite trackers only display your current name, not any prior changes to it,” the company clarified. Epic Games also stated that none of the email addresses associated with Epstein in the public documents exist within its account system. Since the files were released, several users have reportedly created accounts with similar-looking usernames and email addresses to fuel confusion.

No Digital Footprint Linking Epstein To Fortnite

Official records, including findings by US authorities, state that Epstein died by suicide in his jail cell in New York in August 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. No credible evidence has ever emerged to contradict that conclusion.

Despite repeated debunking, the episode highlights how fragments of real information, when stripped of context, can rapidly evolve into viral misinformation, especially when combined with public distrust and the enduring fascination surrounding Epstein’s life and death.
