Google has started rolling out a new AI-powered playlist feature on YouTube Music, making it easier for users to build playlists without manually searching for songs. With this update, subscribers can simply describe the kind of music they want and let the app do the rest. The feature is currently available to YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium users on both Android and iOS.

The new AI Playlist tool can be found inside the Library tab. Users need to tap on “New” and then select “AI Playlist” to get started. From there, they can use either text or voice prompts to explain what they’re in the mood for. Once activated, the app generates a playlist based on the description. A small Gemini logo appears alongside the feature, hinting at the technology behind it, though Google hasn’t directly named its chatbot in the announcement.

YouTube confirmed the rollout through a post on X, calling it another step in its growing use of AI across Google’s products. The company shared simple steps to use the feature and highlighted how quickly an idea or mood can now turn into a personalised playlist.

Behind the scenes, the AI Playlist feature relies on Google’s Gemini models combined with YouTube’s massive music catalogue. The system interprets moods, genres and themes using a mix of metadata, artist connections and user listening habits. While YouTube hasn’t revealed the full mechanics, it says the model continues to learn and improve based on how people interact with the playlists it creates.

This move ties closely to how YouTube already works. The company has previously said that recommendations account for more than 70 percent of watch time on its main platform. By letting users describe what they want in natural language, YouTube Music reduces the effort required to build playlists and makes it easier to explore very specific themes.

However, the feature is limited to paid users. Google has increasingly placed popular features like background playback and lyrics behind a subscription, and AI playlists now join that list. Earlier this year, YouTube said it had crossed 100 million subscribers globally across YouTube Premium and YouTube Music, and new AI tools appear to be part of its strategy to keep that number growing.

YouTube Music isn’t alone in this space. Spotify has experimented with AI-generated playlists and introduced an AI DJ in select markets, while Amazon Music launched Maestro, a prompt-based playlist generator. What sets YouTube apart is its broader content mix, which includes official tracks, music videos, live performances and user-uploaded content.

For best results, users are encouraged to be as specific as possible when creating prompts. Adding details like mood, tempo, era or even exclusions can help avoid repetitive suggestions. Activity-based prompts, such as music for studying, workouts or long runs, also work well. Over time, refining playlists by removing tracks and saving favourites helps the system better understand individual preferences.

The AI Playlist feature is expected to expand to more regions over the coming days and weeks. YouTube has also indicated that future updates will include stronger protections around sensitive prompts and clearer explanations of how listening history influences recommendations. For now, the tool offers Premium subscribers a quicker, more intuitive way to turn ideas into music.
