Facebook is rolling out a new set of AI-powered tools that let users change the way their photos, Stories and posts look on the platform. Announced on Tuesday, the update is designed to give people more creative control over how they present themselves, whether it’s through profile pictures, Memories or even plain text posts.

One of the more noticeable additions is animated profile pictures. Using Meta AI, Facebook now allows users to turn a regular photo into a moving display picture. These animations can make the person in the image wave, form a heart shape with their hands or even appear with a digital party hat. For best results, Facebook recommends using a clear photo with one person looking directly at the camera. Users can either upload a new image from their phone or pick an existing photo from their Facebook profile. Meta has also confirmed that more animation effects will be added over time.

Facebook is also expanding creative options for Stories and Memories with a new AI-powered Restyle tool. Stories, which disappear after 24 hours, and Memories, which resurface posts from previous years, can now be visually transformed. Users can type a prompt to guide how the image should look or choose from ready-made themes. These include anime-style visuals, illustrated effects and other artistic looks. The tool also allows adjustments to lighting, mood and colours and even lets users swap the background for scenes like a beach or a city skyline.

Beyond photos and videos, Facebook is bringing animations to text-only posts as well. Users can now add animated backgrounds by tapping the rainbow “A” icon while creating a post. The backgrounds range from subtle moving visuals like falling leaves to more dynamic effects such as ocean waves. Facebook says more designs, including seasonal themes, are on the way.

With around 2.1 billion daily active users globally, Facebook remains one of the world’s largest social platforms. However, it has struggled in recent years to stay relevant with younger audiences. These new AI-driven features appear to be part of a broader effort to make the platform feel more expressive, modern and engaging.
