Although for now Tim Cook will continue as CEO of Apple, according to their press release, ensuring a smooth transition of power and responsibilities. As an executive chairman, Tim Cook will, after taking the seat, assist the company as well as engage on a global scale with policymakers. In the press release he said, “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company. I love Apple with all of my being, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with a team of such ingenious, innovative, creative, and deeply caring people who have been unwavering in their dedication to enriching the lives of our customers and creating the best products and services in the world,” said Cook. “John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honour. He is a visionary whose contributions to Apple over 25 years are already too numerous to count, and he is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future. I could not be more confident in his abilities and his character, and I look forward to working closely with him on this transition and in my new role as executive chairman.”

Who Is John Ternus?

John Ternus has spent more than two decades at Apple, starting in the product design team in 2001 and steadily moving up to become senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021. His elevation followed years as vice president, a role he took on in 2013, during which he became increasingly central to Apple’s hardware roadmap.

Pushing Innovation in Apple's Hardware Ecosystem

Over the years, Ternus has worked across nearly every major product category at Apple. His involvement stretches from the early days of devices like the iPad and AirPods to successive generations of the iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch. His role has largely been about aligning engineering efforts across these products rather than focusing on a single line.

The Mac has been a particularly important focus. Under his leadership, there have been some changes in terms of the capabilities and scope of the product range. Apple continues to develop its range with an aim to increase accessibility without compromising on its power. This strategy can be seen in the release of the MacBook Neo, which is one of the new additions to the product line-up.

More recently, his team has led work on Apple’s latest iPhone lineup, including the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, alongside the slimmer iPhone Air and the standard iPhone 17. The approach suggests a more segmented lineup while still maintaining a consistent overall experience.

However, even though this product has managed to become successful, other offerings from the company, like AirPods, keep developing into something much bigger. With the leadership of Ternus, Apple's product has developed from just being a device for playing audio into one where hearing is involved.

Tim Cook's Journey at Apple

Tim Cook joined Apple in 1998 and stepped into the CEO role in 2011, taking charge at a time when the company was already well established but still evolving. Since then, his tenure has been defined by a mix of continuity and expansion, both in products and in the company’s broader direction.

In addition to the introduction of new hardware categories such as the Apple Watch, AirPods, and the latest product – the Vision Pro – Cook has ensured that Apple expands on its services portfolio. Products and platforms such as iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple TV+, and Apple Music have been developed further and have gained much importance, as a result of which Apple can no longer be considered strictly a hardware manufacturer anymore.

With regards to its finances, the company has experienced tremendous growth since Cook took charge of the reins. The market value of Apple, as well as revenues, has increased tremendously, while the number of countries where the company operates is close to being more than 200 worldwide. Moreover, the company now has hundreds of stores globally and has a massive workforce along with a large number of active devices.

As for the company's operations, services have become its prime concern. Services as an independent line of business have become a huge revenue source. Apart from this, in-house silicon used by the company has enabled it to become more efficient and effective in developing new products. Additionally, Cook's emphasis on certain values has become prominent during his tenure as CEO.

Why Is The Timing Of The New CEO Important?

John Ternus will take the helm of the company at a critical juncture; currently the company is facing stiff competition when it comes to the realm of AI, as other big players like Google and Microsoft already have a foothold in this industry, and Apple is still trying to perfect its AI offering. Apple was the most valued company on the stock exchange as well, but that changed as AI became the buzzword. With chips getting more and more traction in the industry, chipmakers have started taking the top spot, with Nvidia standing as the most valued company currently.

Although with the upcoming teaser of the new WWDC 2026 that will take place in the coming months, it seems like Apple is trying to get a hold of their AI business and, moreover, a major overhaul of the Siri-based ecosystem, although Apple has yet to deliver when it comes to the agentic capabilities of their AI suite. Apart from that, the industry is also looking at a new trend that is turning its focus more towards the wearable space, like Meta is going ahead with its glasses.

With John Ternus as Apple's CEO, analysts believe that the focus is going to be more on hardware innovation, which could include investments in places like AR glasses or the highly rumoured foldable device.
