We've all been there. You post a WhatsApp Status, take one last look at it, and immediately notice a typo or realise the caption could have been written better. Right now, the only way to fix it is to delete the Status and upload it again. That, however, could soon change.
WhatsApp is testing a feature that will allow Android users to edit the caption of a Status update even after it has gone live. The feature was first spotted by WABetaInfo and is currently available to a limited number of beta testers running WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.30.1.
Once the feature is available, editing a Status caption appears to be fairly straightforward. Users will be able to do it directly from the list of their shared Status updates, where WhatsApp is adding a new Edit Caption option to the menu. This means you won't have to open the Status first just to make a quick change.
There's another, even quicker, way to edit the caption. WhatsApp is also adding a small pencil icon next to the text. Tapping it will let users update the caption in just a few taps.
There is one thing to keep in mind though. The edit option will only remain available for 15 minutes after the Status is posted. Once that window closes, the caption can no longer be changed.
Interestingly, WhatsApp doesn't seem to be treating edited Status captions the same way it handles edited chat messages. While messages in conversations carry an Edited label after they have been modified, the report suggests that edited Status captions won't show any indication that changes were made. So, anyone viewing your Status is unlikely to know that the caption was updated after it was posted.
Although this isn't a major feature, it's one that many WhatsApp users will probably appreciate. Whether it's fixing a spelling mistake, correcting a name or simply rewording a sentence, being able to edit the caption instead of deleting and reposting the entire Status should make the experience a lot less frustrating.
For now, the feature is only rolling out to a small group of beta testers through the Google Play Store. As is usually the case with WhatsApp's beta features, a wider rollout is expected over the coming weeks if testing goes smoothly.
