WhatsApp is making it easier for users in India to pay their regular bills without opening another app. The platform has started rolling out its new Bill Payments feature, which lets users find, check and pay household and utility bills directly through WhatsApp.
The feature works through Bharat Connect, the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) network. WhatsApp users will get access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories, covering payments such as electricity, water, gas, FASTag, insurance, credit card bills and loan repayments.
How WhatsApp Bill Payments works
To pay a bill, users need to open WhatsApp and tap the ₹ icon at the top of the home screen. They can then pick a bill category, choose their biller and enter the required account details.
Once WhatsApp fetches the bill, users can check the amount and go ahead with the payment. The platform supports UPI as well as debit and credit cards for these transactions.
WhatsApp is also adding a few features to make repeat payments less of a hassle. The Payments Home screen will show billers that users have paid before, along with their fetched bills, so they can access them quickly the next time around.
Users can also keep multiple accounts under the same biller. This could be useful if someone is managing separate bills for their home, office or family members.
The Payments Home screen will also show some of the more popular bill categories upfront. If users don't find what they need there, they can tap "See All" to browse the complete list of more than 20 categories.
With this addition, WhatsApp is expanding its payments service beyond features such as mobile recharges and other existing transactions. More importantly, users won't have to switch to a separate app just to pay a regular household bill.
The Bill Payments feature is being rolled out gradually in India and will reach Android and iOS users across the country over the coming weeks.
