Sony raises PS5 prices hike: Earlier there were reports that suggested that Sony's gaming console, the PS5, will get more expensive in the coming days, and markets in the US, UK, Japan, and Europe have already experienced this, with a price rise taking effect from April 2, and now buying one just became more expensive in Southeast Asia as well. Sony has confirmed that there will be a price uptick, which will come into effect beginning May 1, 2026, and will encompass markets in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
How Much Is The Damage?
The price rise will send tremors to gaming fans, as this could replicate globally. The Philippines has received the highest price uptick of 30%, with the standard PS5 now costing PHP 40,032. Vietnam is second in line, with a 27% increase, with the standard model going for VND 16,900,000. In Indonesia PlayStation Portal figures have taken the hardest hit with a 44.5% uptick from IDR 3,599,000 to IDR 5,199,000.
A price rise has already become a reality for a few other markets, which took effect from April 2. In the US right now, the standard PS5 now costs $649.99, which is an uptick of $150 from its November 2020 launch price, and Sony has iterated a familiar reasoning for this price rise, and that is "continued pressures in the global economic landscape." Something that resonates differently when the price rise is to the tune of 30%.
The reason for this price rise that Sony has given comes against the backdrop of a larger economic context, in which there is a global shortage of RAM and chips, which in turn is pushing up the hardware costs. Similarly, Xbox prices have also seen an uptick, and that too twice in the previous year. Other companies like Nintendo are also taking a similar path and are charging more for physical versions of Switch 2 games. So in fact, Sony isn't the only one doing this, but does it justify the price markup in an economy where salaries are not rising according to the cost of living?

Uneven Price Rise In The Markets
The price revision isn’t hitting every Southeast Asian market equally. In Singapore, the PS5 Pro sees a relatively modest uptick of 9.2%, which works out to an added SGD 98. But move to markets like Malaysia and Thailand, and the jump becomes far steeper, with increases hovering around the 20% mark. It’s the mid-tier variants in these developing regions that are taking the biggest hit.
For anyone who’s been holding off on a purchase, this is essentially the last call. Current pricing sticks only until May 1, after which the revised rates kick in.
