God of War fans got two big announcements at San Diego Comic Con. Santa Monica Studio has finally confirmed when God of War Laufey will arrive, and it also revealed that another God of War game starring Kratos is already in development.

The upcoming title will launch exclusively on PS5 on February 16, 2027. While the spotlight this time is on Laufey, Kratos' wife from the Norse saga, the studio made it clear that the Ghost of Sparta still has another chapter ahead.

Both announcements came during a special God of War panel attended by game director Ariel Lawrence, Santa Monica Studio creative head Cory Barlog and members of the voice cast.

 

The release date comes a little over a month after God of War Laufey was unveiled during Sony's State of Play showcase. The game received a lengthy 20 minute gameplay presentation, and Sony's heavy promotion afterwards had many fans convinced that launch wasn't too far away. That has now turned out to be true.

Sony, however, is keeping a few details under wraps. There's still no word on pricing, different editions or when pre orders will go live. For now, the game can only be wishlisted through the PlayStation Store.

The bigger surprise at Comic Con was the update on Kratos. During the panel, Cory Barlog confirmed that Santa Monica Studio is already working on another God of War game with Kratos returning as the lead character.

Barlog did not reveal a title, gameplay details or a launch timeline, but he did say the new game will tie directly into the events of God of War Laufey. While stopping short of sharing more, he hinted that the series is heading in "amazing directions", suggesting Sony has bigger plans for the franchise beyond Laufey's standalone adventure.

God of War Laufey is the first mainline game in the franchise to move away from Kratos as the playable protagonist. Instead, players will experience the story through Laufey after her death in God of War (2018). Her journey takes her into Everywhen, an afterlife realm where gods from different mythologies exist together.

The game features Deborah Ann Woll as Laufey and Jack Quaid as the voice of Phranque, her magical companion cube. Ariel Lawrence is directing the project, which is set to launch exclusively on the PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027.
