OpenAI has unveiled a significant upgrade to ChatGPT’s memory system, introducing a new architecture designed to help the AI better remember user preferences, personal details, and ongoing projects across conversations. The update is aimed at making interactions feel more natural and personalised, while also addressing challenges such as outdated or irrelevant memories. According to the company, the revamped system has been built to handle memory more effectively as ChatGPT’s user base continues to grow.

In a blog post, OpenAI revealed a new memory framework called Dreaming. The technology works behind the scenes to organise, refresh, and maintain information collected from previous chats, allowing ChatGPT to retain useful context over time without users having to repeat the same details in every conversation.

The feature is currently rolling out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers in the US. OpenAI says support for additional regions, as well as Free and Go users, will be expanded over the coming weeks.

The latest upgrade builds on memory features introduced in recent years. In 2024, OpenAI launched Saved Memories, enabling users to ask ChatGPT to remember specific information. The company later expanded those capabilities by allowing the chatbot to reference previous conversations through an earlier version of the Dreaming system.

Focused on Better Context, Preferences and Relevance

OpenAI says the new version of Dreaming is designed around three key goals: helping ChatGPT retain useful context from earlier conversations, applying user preferences more consistently, and keeping stored information up to date as situations and needs change.

To demonstrate the improvements, the company shared results from its internal testing. According to OpenAI, factual recall performance increased from 67.9 percent to 82.8 percent, while preference adherence improved from 55.3 percent to 71.3 percent. Performance in time-sensitive memory tasks also saw a notable jump, rising from 52.2 percent to 75.1 percent.

New Memory Summary Page Gives Users More Control

As part of the update, ChatGPT is also getting a dedicated memory summary page. The feature allows users to see what information the chatbot has learned over time, review stored details, make corrections, delete information, or specify new things they would like ChatGPT to remember in future conversations.

OpenAI also highlighted improvements in efficiency. The company claims the redesigned Dreaming architecture requires significantly fewer computing resources to operate, which should help expand the feature to more users while also increasing memory capacity for existing Plus and Pro subscribers.
